January 6, 2029. What started as a hustler’s last, desperate con, has been catapulted by voters’ imprudent fits of pique into a full-on conspiracy against democracy.
US President Trump, who has described himself as a king and a dictator, and has expressed his desire for a third term as President, leads a MAGA movement ideologically pledged to strengthening the powers of the Presidency, and personally entranced with Donald Trump. In power, he has betrayed us at home with his lies, corruption, and treason; while dishonoring us abroad with his shabby contempt for our allies and his explicit threats against civilization.
In 2016, I couldn’t imagine Trump would make it to the end of the Republican primary. By 2020, I couldn’t believe he was still in office. By the next year, I couldn’t understand how he stayed out of jail. And in 2024, I could not even conceive of Americans voting him back into office.
Astonishingly, MAGA supporters still capable of speaking with me, continue to assure me Trump’s very dishonesty, unreliability, and growing instability prevent him from posing any actual risk to democracy. But a huge cadre of his humorless, unprincipled supporters have been installed in the highest offices, and infiltrated every level of our federal government over the past year, while those who refuse to pledge loyalty to him have been purged.
Wise voters are entitled and inclined to take the President’s open threats and his supporters’ ferocious determination seriously. Responsible citizens are duty-bound to do so.
Fool us once, shame on him. Fool us repeatedly, shame on MAGA. Do anything less than you can, to get MAGA out of the Capitol in 2026 and out of the White House in 2028, without more violence from his supporters? Shame on every single such American.
