On January 6, 2029, Congress will certify the 2028 election results. Eight years to the day from MAGA’s first-term attack on the Capitol. Then, a hustler’s contemptuous 2016 publicity stunt had festered and swollen into an unthinkable and poorly-planned, but deadly and blatant, putsch against the American Republic. Now, it’s all too thinkable. Now, he’s had eight years to stew and plan. Now, he’s been absolved in advance of any criminal liability by the Supreme Court. Now, he’s thoroughly corrupted and suborned a party comprising half of Congress. Now, he’s installed a legion of humorless, unprincipled loyalists throughout the highest offices and most-powerful agencies of the executive branch including the FBI, the CIA, the DOJ, and paramilitary units of ICE and CBP; while those who refuse to bow to him personally have been driven out. And most hurtful of all, 77.3 million Americans joined with his MAGA supporters to vote him back into office, winking and nudging their acceptance of everything that went before. In 2016, I couldn’t imagine he would win the primary, let alone the Presidency. In 2020, I couldn’t believe he avoided impeachment. By 2021, I couldn’t understand how he stayed out of jail. And in 2024, I could not even conceive that he could win office again. I’d like to take it for granted our democracy is safe and strong, but it’s clearly not. I’d like to believe, as I once did, that every American hand would be against a usurper who tried to remain in the White House contrary to the will of the people. But that’s demonstrably untrue. I’d like to discount the threat, even though he or his closest supporters have compared him to a king and a dictator; and have acknowledged they have a plan and a desire to keep him in the White House. But that would just be irrational and hard-headed. Wise voters are entitled and inclined to take explicit threats seriously. Responsible citizens are duty-bound to smell the rot, admit the danger, and do what they can to strengthen the Republic. Now, more than ever, is the time for each of us to remember our reason, return our attention to the evidence around us, and listen to our conscience. |
